Solar Screen
A solar window shade is a device that blocks sun from entering an
area either through a window or some other opening. These types of products
can be installed either interior or exterior. Often the opening is a building
overhang. Other times it might be a patio cover or patio opening. Solar window
shades can be static or operable. Some of the most common are fixed panels
made up of framing of aluminum or wood and fabrics which are typically vinyl
coated fiberglass and polyester. Acrylic coated cottons are also used to
create shaded areas to protect people and furnishings from the harsh effects
of the direct rays of the sun. You will also find operable systems that move
vertically and horizontally depending on the need. In some advanced systems
there is a constant tension placed on the end of the fabric so that the system
can be operated in any position even from the bottom up.
Typically, this kind of product is installed on east, west, and
south sides of homes and buildings. Solar window shades are not usually
installed on north exposures due to the lack of sun shining on those areas.
However, there are exceptions such as when there might be a glare reflecting
off the south side of an adjacent building. Skylights are especially
susceptible to incoming solar heat gain due to the fact that skylights are
usually exposed to clear sky and receive direct sun rays from whatever
direction the sun is coming from. Constant tension solar window shades are
well adapted to functioning well in horizontal and overhead situations. The
most effective placement for solar window shades is on the exterior of the
building or window.
Retractable solar window shades are normally mounted to walls,
overhangs, or roofs. These types of systems are referred to as retractable
awnings. A solid acrylic coated fabric is typically used on these products. A
retractable awning will not only provide shade on the window or wall but will
help create outdoor living spaces with elegance. Temperatures on patios will
reduced some 10 to 15 degrees with a moveable awning in the extended position.
Motorization and sun sensors are recommended to protect the awnings in case of
a sudden storm. It is recommended to always install a wind sensor with a
motorized awning.
